The mission of the paediatric audiology research center at the AP-HP Necker-Enfants malades hospital is to improve diagnosis and develop innovative therapeutic solutions for childhood deafness.

Deafness is a societal issue because it affects a very large number of human beings: according to the WHO 466 million people, including 34 million children, have a disabling hearing impairment.

In children, deafness is mostly congenital, i.e. present from birth and concerns about 1 case per 1000 births, or develops in the first years of life (about 1/750 new cases per year). Deafness has an impact on the development of speech and language, but also more broadly on communication, schooling, socialisation, etc.

It is estimated that more than 80% of early hearing loss has a genetic basis.

In September 2019, a clinical research partnership agreement signed between the Fondation Agir pour l’Audition and Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris enabled the creation of audiology research centers, selected on the basis of clinical excellence.

These centers, coordinated in a network, are dedicated to research involving the human being and to the creation of cohorts, to facilitate and accelerate the development of new therapeutic and diagnostic solutions in the ENT field.
Directed by Professor Françoise Denoyelle, this network currently comprises two centres: the paediatric audiology research center, directed by Dr Natalie Loundon at the Necker-Enfants Malades hospital, and the adult audiology research center, directed by Dr Isabelle Mosnier at the La Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital.

The mission of the paediatric audiology research center is to better understand the origins of the different forms of deafness, to improve diagnosis using innovative tools and to ultimately develop new therapeutic solutions for patients.
